What Is the Military Skills Development System (MSDS)?

The MSDS programme is a two-year contract offered by the SANDF.

It is designed to equip young South Africans with:

Basic Military Training

Specialised Functional Training

Leadership Development

Operational Experience in Army Units

Phase 1: Basic Military Training

Phase 2: Specialised Functional Training

After completing basic training, members receive specialised training aligned with their assigned mustering (career field), such as:

MSDS 2027 Application Requirements

To qualify for the South African Army MSDS 2027 Intake, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Citizenship Requirements

Must be a South African citizen

No dual citizenship allowed

Age Requirements

 

18–22 years old (with Grade 12)

18–26 years old (with a 3-year tertiary qualification) at the time of reporting

Educational Requirements

Minimum Admission Point Score (APS) of 18, excluding Life Orientation (LO)

Grade 12 (Matric) certificate required

Maths & Physical Science required for specialised musterings

Tertiary qualifications (if applicable)

Legal & Medical Requirements

No criminal record

No pending criminal cases

Must comply with SANDF medical fitness standards

Applicants will undergo:

Drug testing

Psychometric evaluation

Medical assessment

No visible tattoos while in uniform (subject to body inspection verification)

Updated CV

Certified copy of South African ID

Certified copy of Matric Certificate

Statement of results for 2025 applicants will be accepted)

Certified copies of tertiary qualifications (if applicable)

Incomplete applications may not be considered.
